Quite a few people have asked me what my thoughts are on App Inventor. Still deciding, really.
Apple has similar tools in Dashcode and Automator so this isn’t like Google beat them in any race. I’m sure if such a tool was a priority for Apple, it could have been rolled out a year ago.
I think what will happen is the GeoCities effect. There are gonna be Crapps galore and everyone’s gonna shove them in the Android Market. If there is a single success story, watch out; fart, burp, barf, gag apps will swarm, divide, and multiply. There is already enough trash in the Market with 100,000 apps and it’s only going to get worse.
Google will still bandy about the number of Crapps, “We have 62 million apps compared to Apple’s 450,000 apps”. Defeats the point of a market, or curation for that matter.
I don’t think it’s going to prompt anyone to say “wow, now I should learn Java and make a kick-ass Android app”. People are lazy, especially programmers. If something crappy can be done in half the time in Inventor, it’ll never be done properly.
